Happy Birthday to M! Happy Birthday to M!

Yes indeed, this month marks the first anniversary of M! - November, 2008 was our premier issue, and we were as full of excitement then as we are now, albeit perhaps for different reasons. Since then, we’ve shared so much of Mazatlán with so many of you - in print, online and in person – but still it seems like there are never enough pages to get everything in each month. Sometimes it’s a juggling act, and necessarily (oops) some balls are dropped; but we do our best to keep you all entertained, informed and happy.

Highlights for me, personally, are many: each and every gorgeous cover, all original art and each distinctive in its own way; the unique and different perspectives of all of M!’s writers; the unexpected feedback from you readers (sometimes for the darnedest things!), the evolution of our website and the community it’s created.

I would be remiss if I didn’t send a big thanks to all of M!’s advertisers: it’s because of you that we’ve been able to do all that we’ve done – and plan for more in the seasons ahead. I encourage all of you to patronize these businesses and let them know you saw their ad in M!

This month, you’ll find more of your old favorites back: Kim Anders (the “Golf Guy”) returns; Bette Schwarz gives us the scoop on the Devil’s Cave in Olas Altas; Pamela Hormazabal Aroca is back with Cinemaz, and Fast:Food offers a partial rundown of new restaurants in the GZ, Marina and Cerritos – a daunting task since there are so many! And, M!’s Business Directory keeps growing – check it out and keep it handy. (All these listings are online, too.)

I read recently that Egyptians are some of the fastest text-messagers in the world: 70 words per minute. Now, I have no clue how fast I can text-message nor do I really care, but that statistic impressed me, if only for the fact that text-messaging apparently is a measurable skill. (Yes, maybe their words are shorter or something – but still.) I’ve always been fascinated with the enormous power of communication – the power to change, the power to connect, the power to open our eyes to the new – which I suppose is part of what lead me to what I do.

Oh, and the party? We'll be celebrating M!'s first anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 7-10pm at Domitila's in the Plaza Machado,  in the courtyard inside. There'll be yummy appetizers, live music and of course birthday cake! See Coming Up, pg. 11 for details. All are welcome - please join us!

Thanks for taking on the dauntng task of putting out a well done magazine monthly and doing a heck of a good job of it, too! The covers are worth the price (libre) of admission alone!

Gracias for your kind words of praise - M! is indeed a labor of love! And I agree with you about the covers - that's one of the most exciting parts for me each month, too.
