The practice of compassion is the practice of peace

In my computer I have a whole file on “mindfulness.” Originally I became aware of the term while studying for my Masters in spirituality, and later, through my son-in-law, who has a Ph.D in psychology. I’ve found this simple concept to be one of the most useful and effective ways to balance my life, so I can be the most grateful, joyful and present in each precious moment.

More than just words, vows are commitments

If you lose the race, why blame your shoes? Couples in troubled relationships often do just that - they find a reason to divert a consequence away from themselves, a probable co-conspirator. It always takes two people to cause a marriage failure. Couples in marriages that thrive and survive are vigilant in honoring their vows! In 1944, only 1.7% of all marriages in the U.S. ended in divorce. Americans are now faced with the stunning reality that marriages today have become a coin flip - 50/50. What has changed?

Cultivating Stillness, Silence & Waiting

astrology

We are now in Advent, the holy days leading up to the birth of the Sun. Each night we light candles at our tables amidst our families, signifying light in the darkness. December 6 is the feast of St. Nicholas. December 12 is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Santa Lucia, and the first day of Hanukkah. We light the menorah. More lights in the darkness. I invite all readers to light a candle each night until the Epiphany (January 6), when the Magi (Persian astrologer kings) bring gifts (of Initiation – Capricorn) to the Holy Child. Lighting our candles together creates unity and oneness among us. I will think of all my readers as I light the candles each evening.

NoMa / North Mazatlán: Discovered

north mazatlan

Our new column opens the door to Nuevo Mazatlán

We live in what’s officially known as Nuevo Mazatlán, which encompasses the area near the Marina and to the east and north of it. It’s affectionately called ‘The Twilight Zone,’ given what’s happened in the last two or three years. Our once uncluttered beach is now home to a plethora of new high-rise condominiums and hotels in various stages of construction. However, this area is more than just a massive construction zone - it’s also developing into an exciting area diverse in services, amenities and eateries. I’d like to let you in on some of the news from my end of town.

Mazatlán’s street cats: Highly evolved urban felines

Life on the streets of Mazatlán can be arduous and austere, especially if you have four legs, or more specifically if you were born with four legs. (I’ve seen street dogs with less than four legs.) Street animals are common throughout the city; unwanted dogs and cats eking out varying degrees of a minimal living. Yet as bad as things are for these creatures, some manage to pull through well enough to breed, creating the next generation of feral scavengers, a little more cunning and a bit more adapted to the urban environment than their predecessors.
