Yoga: A Path to Well-Being

alt

Physically, mentally & spiritually, it’s the way to go

Yoga has come a long way since the 1960s, and millions of people are experiencing the benefits it has to offer.

Research now shows yoga is effective in treating depression, insomnia and anxiety, and that it greatly reduces stress. On the purely physical level, yoga improves strength, flexibility, respiratory function, posture and balance. If yoga is practiced correctly, the spine can learn to re-align itself, decreasing the incidence of back pain.

Medical professionals have embraced yoga as a way to help patients manage pain, reduce blood pressure and the risk of heart disease and to lessen the side effects of certain medications. Yoga also enhances concentration, focus and the ability to stay present. Longtime yoga students can attest to these benefits.

“I’m now 58 and have been doing yoga for over 15 years,” says Mazatlán resident Bunny Evers. “The combination of strength and flexibility yoga offers has enabled me to stay active both mentally and physically. I believe yoga’s holistic approach has kept me wonderfully well. I rarely suffer from colds, flu or other chronic illnesses.”

It’s a metaphor for our lives as well: maintaining calm and focus amidst the tension, stress and the noise of real life.

Yoga, which means to yoke or unite, teaches us to release the tension in the body and in the mind. In doing this, the spirit evolves. The benefits carry over into our daily lives without us even knowing it.

In practicing a posture, one must let go of the tension but still maintain the pose. Relaxing the intensity of our efforts allows us to meditate on the inner journey. Throughout the practice one continues to focus on the breath and concentrate on what’s happening in the body. It’s a metaphor for our lives as well: maintaining calm and focus amidst the tension, stress and the noise of real life.

“Practicing yoga goes beyond the physical benefits,” says local artist Glen Rogers. “I consider it a form of meditation where I can find a quiet, inner peace.”

This sentiment is common among regular practitioners of yoga. Personally, I believe we slowly, step by step, become better people in our lives as we practice yoga.

Contrary to what many believe you do not have to be strong and stretchy to practice yoga. You begin where you are and move forward from there.

Yoga student and Mazatlán resident Rita Marklin was first introduced to yoga in Montreal in the ‘60s by one of the first yogis to come to North America from India. She’s found comfort and peace of mind in the ritualized sequence of postures that stretch, exercise and strengthen every part of the body, along with the focus on breathing.

“Recently, I had a massage by an experienced massage therapist. She couldn’t believe I’m 75 years old,” says Rita. “She told me she could feel a strong, flexible body. I can feel that too, thanks to yoga.”

Although almost anyone should be able to enjoy a yoga class, you need to find the one that works best for you. Try out different classes, as there are many styles of yoga, ranging from gentle to vigorous. If you’re nervous about a class setting, you can start with a DVD or a book at home or hire a yoga teacher for private lessons.

However you choose to start, always take it at your own pace and listen to your body. Quit when you need to and come out of a pose if it’s causing you pain. Yoga is not a competition. And of course, if you have any medical concerns, check with your doctor before starting a practice.

Personally, yoga is my lifeline. It has been such a gift in my life, and brings a sense of calmness, clarity and peace into my naturally chaotic world. And, there are gifts waiting for you, too.

“My practice of yoga is an integral part of healthy aging, says Bunny. “To me, yoga is the perfect practice for those wanting to grow old honestly and gracefully.”
