Chicken of the Sea: Time for Tuna

tuna comparison

Who knows what’s inside that can? We do! Read on to find out the inside story

Let’s face it: everyone likes tuna. And at some point or another, you just want a good ol’ tuna sandwich-on-toast.

The problem is that much of the canned tuna here, is, well, just not what we’re used to. We’re looking for filets-in-a-can, tuna with integrity – not just the schwag of the fish that’s leftover when all the good parts have gone elsewhere.

No Sugar, Just Spices

Sometimes, it is all in a name – and if you don’t know it, it’s that much harder to find it. In my research, I found that some of the spices have more than one name. This should help you in the mercados or grocery stores either by sight or by bringing the list and showing a clerk what it is you’re looking for.

Foodies, rejoice: So many options, so little time!

One look at “The B” Art & Bistro (opposite the Fiesta Holiday Inn in the Gold Zone) and you know Mazatlán is growing up. Its sleek, chic exterior carries over into the cozy art gallery/bistro, with contemporary seating, a lounge area and an open kitchen that’s really open – co-owner Omar Macías says patrons are welcome to don an apron and step inside to assist the chef. (A blessing or a curse, we shall see!) The walls exhibit local art, and tastings and events are being planned. There’s a nice wine selection and a Mediterranean-inspired menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner and tapas, including pizza, salads, desserts (crème bruleé!) and a patio out front too. Open Tues.-Fri., noon-11:30pm, weekends, 9am-11:30pm. Info: 668-8107.

A quick rundown of new eateries around town

Remember the Ciber Café next to the English Lending Library on Sixto Osuna in Olas Altas, across from the Art Museum? It’s moved down the street to the corner of Venus and become Super Cocina D’Paulina, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner – and still a ciber too. Paulina and hubby Francisco offer a big menu of breakfasts, tortas (sandwiches), burgers, ribs, carne asada, a salad bar (complete with yummy housemade dressings), homemade desserts and the best deal of all, lunch and dinner Daily Specials. Francisco – previously chef at Casa Country, the Purple Onion and Fiesta Holiday Inn - invites everyone to come and taste his ribs, which he claims are the best in town. Open 8m to 9pm daily except Sunday. Info: 668-2393.
