The charming Museo Casa de los Perez Meza is devoted to the history of the famous trovador and composer Luis Perez Meza. Elisa, his daughter, has created this space to honor her father and his music. Luis recorded more than 103 vinyls during his 64 years. As I toured the museum, lights beamed on old posters and different music was playing to complement each era. It’s a small but delightful collection, bursting with family pride to preserve Perez Meza’s memory and all that he contributed to the music of Sinaloa. Afterwards, curl up in a wicker chair in Elisa’s Café and sample a wide variety of coffees and teas. Casa de los Perez Meza, Melchor Ocampo #510, is open 10am to 6pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The Malecon is alive with the sound of traditional Mexican ballads because Oscar and Javier Rojas perform all summer long at La Copa de Leche restaurant in Olas Altas. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday the music begins at 7pm, but the brother’s night doesn’t end at La Copa. Around midnight they pick up their instruments and head for Café Bolero, where night-owl owners, Grace and Roberto Morfin host musicians Thursday-Sunday. Music starts at 8:30pm Sundays at 6:30). Roberto is a fabulous classical guitarist and a singer; spontaneity is Grace’s style, so check out Bolero for pop-up flamenco and tango performances. There’s no cover charge for either La Copa ( 982-5753) or Bolero, on Venustiano Carranza # 18, behind the Freeman Hotel. (985-0003)
Amazing, diverse musical talent filled the streets of Centro…
Starting July 9, our English tenor, Robert Howes, is taking his Cabaret Karaoke pool side at Hotel Las Flores from 1- 5pm. Fridays you can sing away at Gringo Lingos beginning at 7pm
After midnight with G2:
My club guy, G2, reports that bottle service is the latest, cheapest fad for an evening of music and dancing. Gather up your friends, order a bottle of tequila, vodka or whatever, choose the mix (or not) and you’re good till 5am. The hip clubs this month are Sumbawa with its beachside beds and multi-tiered bar Vocu; the new ocean-view GOA (formerly Cherry), the remodeled Latitude Lounge and of course Senor Frog’s. Bengala is the hot spot in the Marina. Two party blocks in Centro feature four buzzing bars: La Tertulia and Beli St. Pub on Belisario Dominguez, martini bar Modular around the corner on Sixto Osuna and Lorna – with great late-night bands - on Ninos Heroes.
Dia de la Musica
Maestro Gordon Campbell returned from conducting The Dallas Symphony Orchestra just in time to conduct the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra at the Angela Peralta Theatre June 9. With only two double dress rehearsals, Maestro Campbell created a magical musical evening. This joyful fundraiser made the third annual Dia De La Musica so successful.
