Don’t let the location of Mucho Antojo - at the edge of the Pemex lot on Rafael Buelna next to Mega – dissuade you from going. Instead, look past the less-than-ambient location and concentrate on the big, fat, killer burritos that are cheap, cheap, cheap and just what you need for a day at the beach, a healthy lunch after a good run or workout, or when you’ve got friends with hungry teenagers visiting.
Mucho Antojo opened just a few months ago and is quickly getting a reputation amongst certain types (surfers, young men, anyone who’s hungry) as the place to go for good eats, cheap. Missing American-style burritos? Then this is your place: in California, we call ‘em “fatties” - big flour tortillas stuffed with your choice of meats, and sour cream, guacamole, beans and salsa, it takes two hands to hold ‘em steady. Eight kinds of meats - from barbacoa, cochinita and pollo adobo to al pastor and chilorio – are all traditional Mexican styles and quite nice; for vegetarians, there’s also a 3-cheese burrito and a vegetable option.

An assortment of tostadas – those big crispy taco-shell bowls piled with your favorite fillings – and tortas (hot sandwiches on bolillos, what we know as hero rolls) are equally huge and satisfying, and in fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to only eat here once. Best to go with friends and share.
Worth a mention too are the fresh fruit plates, with yogurt, nuts, raisins, and if you’ve got a sweet tooth, drizzled with lecherita (sweetened condensed milk) known in these parts as “escamocha.” And, blessed be, you don’t have to drink soda: choose from licuados, smoothies, aguas, fruit frappés and juices. Prices range from $12 for a crispy taco, $19 for a tostada , fruit plate or escamocha, and $36 for a torta or burrito.

Service is fast and efficient and the place is clean as a whistle. You can sit in air-conditioned comfort at bar stools in front of the windows and watch the world (such as it is here) go by or park yourselves at the picnic tables out front in the shaded patio area, surrounded by plants and covered by cheery umbrellas. Of course everything’s available to-go, and if you take a paper menu home you can call in your order too. Either way, you’ll be satisfied and maybe even have leftovers for breakfast.
