A quick rundown of new eateries around town

Remember the Ciber Café next to the English Lending Library on Sixto Osuna in Olas Altas, across from the Art Museum? It’s moved down the street to the corner of Venus and become Super Cocina D’Paulina, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner – and still a ciber too. Paulina and hubby Francisco offer a big menu of breakfasts, tortas (sandwiches), burgers, ribs, carne asada, a salad bar (complete with yummy housemade dressings), homemade desserts and the best deal of all, lunch and dinner Daily Specials. Francisco – previously chef at Casa Country, the Purple Onion and Fiesta Holiday Inn - invites everyone to come and taste his ribs, which he claims are the best in town. Open 8m to 9pm daily except Sunday. Info: 668-2393.

Le soupir amoreoux - the “loving whisper” of champagne - enchants us all

That’s all fine and dandy, but when you’re out and about, sweatin’ up a storm, what’s a girl to do? Check out these non-alcoholic drinks and find your own favorite.

Karma Kitchen Deals a Winning Hand

Thai one on at Playa Bruja’s newest eatery

The idea of a Thai restaurant in Playa Bruja – Playa Bruja?! – evokes exclamations from almost all who hear of it. And no wonder: the far north end of town, with its windswept beaches and tiny strip mall full of souvenir shops, hardly seems like a place where, well, a Thai place would open, let alone thrive. But I’d wager Jeff Sorensen’s Karma Kitchen will be a success: At first, perhaps due to sheer novelty, but then maybe solely because of his Pad Thai.

El Olivo Restaurante y Reposteria

An oasis of good tastes

Finding El Olivo, a tiny bistro-slash-deli tucked into a greenery-filled niche dead-center in the Gold Zone, reminded me that I need to trust my instincts more. From the first week I arrived in Mazatlan several years ago, every time I went past it I felt drawn to go inside. I didn’t, until now.
