On Being Mexican: Comfortable with Chaos

Chaos is the flower of the Mexican style of life. It is this that gives us our immeasurable spontaneity of character - and also that sometimes-frustrating impunctuality in our everyday social life, and, yes, an “irregularity” in regards to love, with home and the “second home.” The spirit of chaos adds undeniable spirit to our parties and festivities, barroquism to our streets and roads, gossip to feed the emotion of our Carnaval, and at the same time, indefinition to our goals and artistic confusion to our souls. It creates deep ups and downs in our economic and political life. Overall, our Mexican-style chaos is a bittersweet remedy over pain and boredom.

ALMOST everyone knows that Canadians do not live in igloos and don’t get to work, school or go shopping by dog sled or horse and buggy; television, social networking and talkative Canadians have laid these myths to rest. There are some things, though, that are uniquely Canadian. For instance, we do not have a one or two dollar bill. These come in the form of coins: the Loonie is one dollar and the Toonie is two dollars. Heaven forbid there should be a five dollar coin! We drink pop, not soda and we know the Mounties don’t always “look like that!”
