Take your pick: Feel-good endings, clever scripts, humorous or horror

Quarantine

Rated: R (Violent/Disturbing Content, Language and Terror)
Genre: Horror
Cast: Jennifer Carpenter, Steve Harris, Jay Hernandez, Johnathon Schaech

While filming a routine ‘Nightwatch’ report, Angela (Carpenter) and her cameraman Scott (Harris), along with some residents, a cop and two firemen, become trapped in an apartment building which, unknown to them at the time, has just been quarantined by the CDC. Scott keeps his camera rolling as we see watch the terrifying trail of disease, fear and death. A remake of the Spanish film ‘Rec’ and certainly not for the faint-hearted. A great horror for those who like a good fright.

These films are due for release in Mazatlán this month, but are subject to change. Check your local listings or video store for exact times and dates.

Revolutionary Road

Rated: R (Language, Sexual Content and Nudity)
Genre: Drama/Romance
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Michael Shannon

Trapped in mid-‘50s suburbia, April (Winslet) and Frank (DiCaprio) battle with the pitfalls of their everyday suburban lives. Unfulfilled dreams and aspirations lay dormant as they struggle to feel alive. When the couple considers reliving a long-lost dream by moving to France, the relationship takes its toll and we see the deterioration of a dream destined to fail. This award-winning cast and director will not disappoint. A must-see!

Yes Man!

Rated: PG (Crude Sexual Humor, Brief Nudity and Language)
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel, Bradley Cooper, Rhys Darby, Terence Stamp

If you enjoyed ‘Liar, Liar’ and ‘Bruce Almighty,’ then you’ll probably enjoy ‘Yes Man,’ although many of Carrey’s antics and basically the feel of the film will leave you thinking you’ve seen the movie before. Carrey plays a loan officer named Carl. After a conversation with a self-help guru, Carl finds that saying “Yes” to everything has him doing things and meeting people he would never have encountered otherwise. Carrey is his usual goofy self and gets a giggle or two from his audience.

Gran Torino

Rated: R (Language, Racist Remarks, Some Violence)
Genre: Drama
Cast: Clint Eastwood, Christopher Carley, Bee Vang, Ahney Her

‘Gran Torino’ brings a little Dirty Harry back to the big screen. Eastwood plays Walt, a war vet neighbor to a Hmong family. When the teenage boy from next door gets involved with the local Hmong gang, Walt steps up in true Dirty Harry style and steals the show with his wit, stubbornness and heroic courage. Dramatic, surprisingly funny and well-directed. Please be warned: This film contains a lot of racist and demeaning language, which is used in a comical way but may offend some viewers.>/p>

Ghost Town

Rated: PG (Some Sexual Humor, Strong Language and Drug References)
Genre: Comedy/Romance
Cast: Ricky Gervais, Tea Leoni, Kristen Wigg, Greg Kinnear

‘Ghost Town’ is an original and hilarious comedy about a dentist (Gervais) who temporarily dies during a routine medical procedure and wakes to find that he is being harassed by ghosts with unresolved issues. The combination of Kinnear, Leoni and Gervais results in plenty of laughter and rarely a dull moment. A feel-good ending, a brilliant and clever script and humorous performances by all the cast make this comedy a great night in.

Shut Up and Sing

Rated: PG (Political Views)
Genre: Documentary/Drama
Cast: The Dixie Chicks, George W. Bush, Bill Maher

Natalie Maines, Emily Robinson and Martie Maguire are The Dixie Chicks. In 2003, while performing in London, lead singer Natalie Maines introduced their song “Travellin’ Soldier” with this remark: “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all...and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.” The controversy which followed the statement is documented for our viewing pleasure in this eye-opening film about freedom of speech and how only one comment can change a band’s life. A powerful documentary with archive footage that will make you either laugh, mad or cry.

My Best Friend's Girl

Rated: R (Strong Language, Sexual Content and some Nudity)
Genre: Comedy/Romance
Cast: Dane Cook, Kate Hudson, Jason Biggs, Alec Baldwin

This comedy starring Dane Cook (Tank) and Kate Hudson (Alexis) teeters on the brink of insulting, but will still give you a good chuckle. Tank is every man’s secret weapon: Men hire him to take their ex-girlfriends on traumatically horrifying dates in order for the girl to realize how great their former partner was. Tank’s friendship with his cousin Dustin (Biggs) is tested when Dustin asks Tank to date his girl. A sure hit for Dane Cook fans with plenty of offensive and crude humor, with a romantic finale.

Prom Night

Rated: PG (Violence, Terror, Language and some Sexual Material)
Genre: Horror
Cast: Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, Jessica Stroup, Dana Davis and James Ransone

For those expecting a terrifying, blood ridden gore-fest, you’ll have to wait for ‘Prom Night 2.’ This so-called “Horror” had little “Horror” to be found. Apart from the token creepy killer, screaming girl running for her life and an occasional spray of blood, one is left wanting more. The film revolves around a teenage girl named Donna (Snow) who survived the brutal slaying of her family and is just beginning to leave it all behind when her family’s murderer escapes from jail on her prom night. A less-than-ordinary horror with a less-than-ordinary cast and script.
