Bad Lieutenant : Port of Call New Orleans (Enemigo Interno)
Nicolas Cage, Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes
Cage plays a corrupt New Orleans cop, who, after Katrina, spirals out of control. I saw this film with the hopes it would tell a story, maybe show us actual Katrina footage, or even evoke some raw emotions, but instead, viewers are left with a disturbing look at one man’s ride to destruction. Drugs, violence and bad acting: It’s a wonder they didn’t call this “Bad Film.”
Love Happens (Un Amor Inesperado)
Aaron Eckhart, Jennifer Aniston
A drama/romance with all the usual trimmings. An unusual lack of chemistry between the lead characters makes this film a little dull. The film is centered around the two love interests, which begs the question, why would you put two boring actors in the same film? Predictable ending – just look at the title of the film. Ahhhh, love...Happy Valentine’s Day!
An Education (Enseñanza De Vida)
Carey Mulligan, Peter Sarsgaard Olivia Williams, Cara Seymour, Dominic Cooper
A quirky drama about a talented teenage girl who finds out that life doesn’t always go according to plan. Set in Britain in the ‘60s, I found this film enjoyable, light-hearted and cheeky. Mulligan shines as Jenny, the teenage girl bored with life. Expect to see great things from her! Sarsgaard is, as always, his charming self and fits perfectly into the role of the older man.
The Hurt Locker (Zona De Miedo)
Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty
From the female director of “Point Break” comes this war-time film set in Iraq. This raw and unnerving look at bombs will leave you wondering why anyone would ever want to be part of a bomb squad. When the leader of a squad is blown up while defusing a roadside bomb, his replacement puts the rest of the squad on edge. But they must work together to survive their tour of duty. Don’t expect a cushy, girlie film here, folks...I had war dreams for the next two nights.
Up in the Air
George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman
Originally a 2001 novel, 'Up in the Air' has been adapted to the big screen with smooth precision. It won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes and will be sure to be a big winner at the Academy Awards. The story revolves around Ryan Bingham, (Clooney), a man who's job it is to downsize businesses (basically, he fire's complete strangers) ad who spends more time flying and in hotels that most people in the world. When a young go-getter threatens to replace the personal touch that comes with his job, he sets out to prove that human participation in the firing process is a well tuned art.
