2009 was all about the big bucks in cinema, with four of the highest-grossing films of the year making it onto the top 50 of all time. With the Oscar Nominations around the corner (Feb.2), expect plenty of movie buzz! Happy New Year to all the Cinemaz readers!
Avatar
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi
Director James Cameron does it again. He brought us the technology to sink the Titanic, he made a hybrid Terminator and now, we have Avatar, a new dimension in special effects that will blow your mind. Sci-fi at a whole new level.
Sherlock Holmes
Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams
England is in trouble and only one man can save her...you guessed it, Sherlock Holmes! Holmes and his sidekick Watson must unravel a plot that could destroy the country. Interesting choice of casting, but the quirkiness of all the characters makes the film entertaining in more ways than one.
Fame (Fama)
Naturi Naughton, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Kelsey Grammer, Kay Panabaker.
The film, for those who never saw the 1980 original, chronicles the lives of a handful of New York students who make it into the prestigious Performing Arts University. This glossier, teenier remake had me yawning and wondering why they bothered.
Paranormal Activity (Actividad Paranormal)
Kathie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs.
Who said ghosts don’t exist?! In the tradition of “Cloverfield” and “Blair Witch,” this film shares the digital camera footage found at a grizzly murder scene. A young couple experience strange happenings in their new suburban home and decide to set up a camera to capture the occurrences.
Zombieland (Zombies)
Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin.
You ain’t never seen a zombie movie like this one before! Comedy, horror and romance melt into this very clever, very funny flick about, well...zombies! There’s blood, there’s guns and, well...zombies! Note: Learn the Zombieland Rules – they WILL come in handy one day! LOL.
Law Abiding Citizen (El Vengador)
Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb.
A disturbing look at justice gone horribly wrong. This thriller is a mish-mash of bloodshed, violence, morally questionable decisions and unrealistic scenarios, which begs to question the meaning of the film. A cat-and-mouse game with so many twists it will leave you disoriented.
