Kym (Hathaway) has just come out of rehab, again. It’s the weekend of her sister’s wedding and all the drama and tension that comes with planning a wedding hits home from the moment she arrives. Rachel (DeWitt) is the older sister/bride-to-be. Kym’s need for constant attention takes its toll on Rachel who simply wants her wedding day to be about her and not her younger sister. A very real look at a family struggling to deal with the loss of a child as well as dealing with the weight that comes with a recovering addict all, while planning a wedding. Always powerful and often amusing, Hathaway was nominated for her role as the young recovering addict. A sure winner!

The results are a gripping bio-pic with award-winning performances from both Frank Langella and Michael Sheen.

Based on a true story, Clint Eastwood directs this compelling film about a woman (Jolie) whose son was abducted, but has her prayers answered a few months later with the return of what the LAPD claim is her son. The local Reverend (Malkovich) takes on her plight to disprove the LAPD’s claims and in the process a serial killer is uncovered and a corrupt police force is brought to justice. Emotionally charged and brilliantly casted, Jolie gives a performance to remember.

Frozen River

Set in a small town bordering a Mohawk Reservation in New York State and Quebec, this gritty and raw drama shows us the lengths two woman will go to in order to provide for their children. Ray (Leo) and Lila (Uplam) are from opposite ends of the spectrum. Ray is a white mother of two, with a husband who runs out on them days before Christmas. Lila is a Mohawk Indian, living in a trailer and trying to make ends meet. When smuggling people across the border via the frozen solid river becomes an option to make quick money, the two women work together and in the process, form a bond. A touching and powerful film worthy of its Oscar nominations.
